Deborah Tanzer
In memory of Frida Petunia (2014-2024)

My dearest darling beloved Frida was euthanized on October 31. She fought her illness bravely and with such spirit that even when its malevolence was growing at the end, she managed still to love life — eating with relish, enjoying her walks, and playing with other dogs on the street, which, perhaps harking back to her earliest days in Puerto Rico, was her biggest joy in life. But the cancer finally won, and despite her vast courage, it was time for her life to end. She did that with grace as well, as I held her and looked into her eyes as the light was fading from them, and told her how much I loved her.

Frida was a very special dog. Clearly an old soul, she was deeply sensitive and empathic, very wise, her beautiful penetrating eyes searching your depths and knowing — truly knowing — what was in your heart. But she also loved fun and the simple pleasures of life, running and prancing around happily (I called her "Mrs. Wigglebutt"). From the horrific beginnings no homeless animal in the world should ever have to face, because of our species’ treatment of them, she came so far, overcoming her traumas and fears, flourishing into the wonderful sweet, complex being she was always meant to be. Frida died too young, but her time here on earth was a blessing for me and so many others, human and non-human. Go with God Frida, or perhaps, Ve con Dios.
